Week 1 - Post 3

The speed of light amazes me- not the actual velocity but what it represents. Why is it that 300,000,000m/s is the speed that an object with mass would approach an infinite mass? There must be something supremely significant about electromagnetic energy and its properties.  What happens when you go faster than the speed of light, would you time travel? And would bodies approaching the speed of light theoretically become singular since you decrease in apparent length the quicker you move? I also want to learn more about orientation in space. Because space is a vacuum and there is no "up, down, right, left, back, and forth. For most people if you ask them to represent gravity they might suggest a trampoline with a heavy object in the middle that constitutes space time and any celestial body. But with earths force of gravity already in effect, how is this a rational paradigm?

In my previous blog I talked about how electromagnetism is very powerful energy. It needs no medium to travel through, and it is unobstructed by wind or other celestial happenings. I think it is really cool too that God is often represented by light in the Bible. Also "Ohr" in Hebrew mean light and in Judaism physical light is used to describe metaphysical divine emanations (emanation in latin means to flow out of/ the source of all things). Light is also correlated to good (versus darkness) so I wonder if when these religious texts were being written that the authors knew the power of goodness and love and light!

  1. How were they able to prove the idea of the speed of light?

    1. In the 17th century, a Danish philosopher timed an eclipse of one of Jupiter's moons and noticed a "lag" and was able to conclude light traveled at a finite speed! Interestingly enough, observing eclipses have been really helpful in the world of astronomy. It is how scientists could prove gravity bends light!
