Week 3 Post 3

Utilizing the idea that everyone and everything are being constantly affected by particle moment and changing can be very impactful. Many many people are afraid of change because it is just too... uncertain;  there is a popular political ideology that by definition is "averse to change or innovation". The acceptance of uncertainty has the ability to uplift the oppressed, and when we learn to promote change we learn to love better.  As Stephen Hawking wisely stated it "Intelligence is characterized by the ability to adapt to change".

Similarly, accepting the absence of free will may lead to increased compassion for others. Free Will does not work thanks to particle movement and the principal that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Particular actions caused me to type this sentence while sitting in the exact position I am in. Said particular actions were also governed by some other distinct influence. This applies to everyone and everything  You could theoretically trace every action and thought that ever was to this moment. Granted that is impossible, you can start to see that given someone else's exact circumstances and  genetics you would be making the decisions they are. When someone does something we disagree with, it is easy to say things such as "they are so stupid" or "they deserve to rot in jail". But before doing so, try to have some compassion and empathy for their situation. Something negative likely happened in their life that pushed them to commit disagreeable acts. If possible, before making a negative judgement on someone, talk to the them and become certain of whether or not they have the ability to learn and grow from their mistakes. And no, the absence of free will is not an excuse for immoral behavior. The future is always and forever going to be uncertain, so by thinking nothing matters because you don't have free will is embodying a problem that has no logical need to exist.

In theory, you could trace every action and thought every person and object has ever had back to some origin action (Big Bang!) where we are then struck with the question of who or what caused that action that pushed everything into place where it is right now? I am also thinking you could also conclude that this very moment was predetermined at the dawn of creation- it truly is destiny! Lastly, isn't it divine that there is information that exists but will never be reachable to humans? It is like all the the knowledge is reserved and only accessible for only some all knowing entity!

Also this is a very cool quote:

Given for one instant an intelligence which could comprehend all the forces by which nature is animated and the respective positions of the beings which compose it, if moreover this intelligence were vast enough to submit these data to analysis, it would embrace in the same formula both the movements of the largest bodies in the universe and those of the lightest atom; to it nothing would be uncertain, and the future as the past would be present to its eye. - Pierre-Simon Laplace

  1. Can you give an example of how the absence of free will may lead to increased compassion for others?

    1. If somebody called me a stupid butt, I might be angry with them and resent them, but if I consider that they may not have the best family life, and if I was in his situation I would do the same thing, I can shake off whatever he said and try to understand where he is coming from.
